I graduated from Cornish’s Motion Design program, but I definitely have mixed feelings about the experience. Cornish dissolved their illustration program the year I enrolled, so being young and stupid, I just hopped over to the brand new Motion Design curriculum with promises of VIDEO GAMES and ANIMATION. Unfortunately, the whole thing was wishy-washy at best. They didn’t really nail down what they were equipped to deliver before they started pushing students through. It may have improved, but it may also mean they pared it down to pure motion graphics and/or UI/UX type stuff? No real 3D or gaming.
I ended up taking some classes through FuturePoly, and those were decent. Some of them run about three months for 1.5k, which isn’t bad, relatively speaking. Plus, the courses are taught by ~industry professionals~ which … is good and bad. They know workflow really well, and what companies are looking for, but they might not be the very best teachers. I would recommend doing one of their day seminars to feel them out before investing in a class. (I think they even run Groupons from time to time.)
Those are the two programs I can speak to. I’ve heard mixed reviews about DigiPen. I think they’re more heavily technical?
Anyway, I do honestly believe that concept art and illustration are a really valuable basis for any design setting. There’s always going to be a need to pre-render ideas before they get executed. I’m always more excited about the initial idea/possibility end of things, anyway.
I HOPE THIS HELPS.
