Someone stated today that the gaming industry cannot and should not change for the “2%” demographic that is female. Since we all know that 85% of statistics are made up on the spot, I’m curious to see how many people in the tumblr sphere are part of this demographic.

It’s easy to see how it won’t change when I’m one of two women in a company of fifty-ish. (And this is probably fairly representative of the whole, if I factor in the gaming-focused classes I’ve taken that have had similar ratios.) Why would it change when the whole production is mostly overseen by men? And when companies are just concerned about what will sell to their targeted 20-something male demographic.

Just like in all things, we need more women in this industry if we want a better balance, and I feel like it would refresh the whole business to have input from a broader demographic, even if it just starts in subtle ways.

I feel like we’re not even asking for a lot, either. Just more diverse and less objectified ladies!
